Crumbs Bake Shop is offering free cupcakes on a first-come, first-serve basis as it opens its doors Friday in Highland Park.
The store officially opens Monday, Jan. 26, at 469 Central Ave., in the former Turtle’s Cupcakes space. However, Crumbs will be open for a “customer preview weekend” Friday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. daily, according to a statement. That’s when customers can pick up free cupcakes and other baked goods (as long as they last.)
The store is part of a national chain that first opened in 2003 in New York City and filed for bankruptcy last July. Lake Forest resident Marcus Lemonis, host of the CNBC reality series “The Profit,” took over the chain in a joint venture with Fischer Enterprises. He said he planned to reopen 26 locations around the country and diversify its offerings.
Already, a Crumbs Bake Shop has reopened at Water Tower Place in downtown Chicago.
“Crumbs fans in the community have given us the gift of their loyalty, so we are looking forward to giving a gift back by offering a more diverse menu and opening convenient locations that Chicago natives, suburbanites and tourists can enjoy,” Lemonis said in a statement.
In July, Lemonis said new Crumbs menu items could include any brands controlled by him or Fischer Enterprises, such as Dippin’ Dots ice cream, Doc Popcorn, Little Miss Muffin, Key West Key Lime Pies, Sweet Pete’s Candy, Coffee of Grace and some gluten-free offerings.
The updated Crumbs menu already includes new cupcake flavors, including Sweet Pete’s Salted Caramel Chocolate.
